Don’t Wait to Be Happy

you are far too smart to be the only thing standing in your way

Last Friday morning at work my friend got a news alert on her phone about a big explosion at a manufacturing plant in a nearby town. Later in the day we learned that there were two people seriously injured in the explosion and lost their legs. Both of the men were air lifted out to have emergency surgery to try to save their lives.

It turns out that one of the men is the ex-husband of one of the girls I work with, Connie. She left work in tears, it was very, very sad. The rest of us at work, although we don’t know Connie’s ex, were shell shocked. What a random, horrific thing to happen.  Everyone was talking about how you never know when life will change or someone will get sick or die.

It is so true… Life can change in an instant. No one knows what a day will bring…

I can’t remember when I was first introduced to don Miguel Ruiz and his book The Four Agreements but I opened it this morning and this is the passage I read:

“Use every moment to be happy, to do what we really enjoy doing. If we only have one week to live, let’s enjoy life. Let’s be alive. We can say, “I’m going to be myself. No longer am I going to run my life trying to please other people. No longer am I going to be afraid of what they think about me. What do I care what others think if I am going to die in one week? I am going to be myself.”

I am not a naturally happy person. Through my mindfulness work, it is becoming more of a habit, but I do have to work on it. Friday at work was a big wake up call.

Today I am not going to wait to be happy. Just for today I will not let my mind be clouded with fear or resentment. Today is a gift, and I am going to be myself and be happy.

  1. I am often reminded of how short life is. A recent passing of one of my Army buddies really hit some of us in a place that reminded us of this and we have since then started planning a together. We have to do all we can to be happy, live our lives and quickly try to knock off the bucket lists.

    1. I’m sorry about your friend. It really hits home when someone close passes, that’s for sure. Thanks for the comment.
