Walking my dog in the rain

I started a new work schedule this week after asking for it months and months ago. I went from working 5 eight-hour days a week to working  4 ten-hour days, with one weekday off each week. Well today is my first day off, hurray!

Enjoy the little things in life

I didn’t sleep well last night which is pretty par for the course lately for me. Once Bob left for work around 6am I slept hard for about an hour and woke up with my right leg completely numb. Ugh.

It’s rainy and cold out and I decided to forgo a morning Spin class because I feel pretty lazy and besides, my dog Buddy deserves some fresh air. So I bundled up and put on my rain hat and out the door we headed…

We went around the neighborhood like we used to years ago when he was a little pup (Buddy’s 9 now).  It’s about a 2 mile loop. It was a really nice exhilarating walk in the misty morning rain. It felt great to be out with him on a quiet weekday morning. It’s so nice walking around outside with all the kids at school and the neighbors at work.

There is a little lake down the hill from our house and we went there so I could let Buddy run off his leash and chase squirrels with abandon. He still likes to chase those squirrels, even though he’s never caught one, and wouldn’t know what to do if he did 🙂

He is so damn cute and such a good boy. Buddy is a German Shephard and has a lot of energy. I sometimes used to think it was a burden, but actually what a gift to have a dog that loves to be walked and exercised. Even thought sometimes I don’t feel like going for a walk, it always feel great once we’re outside.

And being out in nature is such a balm for the soul. Even on a cold January day in the rain, it didn’t take long to warm up. With the raindrops all over the tree branches it was quite stunning in some spots. There were a few leftover patches of snow from the storm few weeks ago, and there were these really beautiful bright red berries on some bushes near the little lake.

It was really a feast for my senses, the smells, the sights, the sound of the little streams around the lake.

And after a mile or so into our walk Buddy turns his head around and gives me a big smile and wags his tail at me. Like he’s saying,”Thanks Mom, this is fun!”

No Thank You Buddy. You are the best dog.

Yesterday at work my friend was telling me how busy her weekend was. She heard everyone talking about how nice and mild the weather was, and remarked that she was so busy she didn’t even notice it.
