When You Realize You are Complete Now, You are Free

This passage brought me so much comfort today:

Eckhart Tolle you are complete now

Moving Deeply into the Now

In the absence of psychological time, your sense of self is derived from Being, not from your personal past. Therefore, the psychological need to become anything other than who you already are is no longer there. In the world, on the level of your life situation, you may indeed become wealthy, knowledgeable, successful, free of this or that, but in the deeper dimension of Being you are complete and whole now.

In that state of wholeness would we still be able or willing to pursue external goals?

Of course, but you will not have illusory expectations that anything or anybody in the future will save you or make you happy. As far as your life situation is concerned, there may be things to be attained or acquired. That’s the world of form, of gain and loss.

Yet on a deeper level you are already complete, and when you realize that, there is a playful, joyous energy behind what you do. Being free of psychological time, you no longer pursue your goals with grim determination, driven by fear, anger, discontent, or the need to become someone.

Nor will you remain inactive through fear of failure, which to the ego is loss of self. When your deeper sense of self is derived from Being, when you are free of “becoming” as a psychological need, neither your happiness nor your sense of self depends on the outcome and so there is freedom from fear.

You don’t seek permanency where it cannot be found” in the world of form, of gain and loss, birth and death. You don’t demand that situations, conditions, places, or people should make you happy, and then suffer when they don’t live up to your expectations.

Everything is honored but nothing matters. Forms are born and die, yet you are aware of the eternal underneath the forms. You know that “nothing real can be threatened.”

When this is your state of Being, how can you not succeed? You have succeeded already.

    I got to know about you, as I was watching one of Eckhart Tolle’s youtube videos and I read your comment about your anxiety before.
    I suffer from panic attack and anxiety for some years. Right now, I am on medication and I feel much better but in the last days, I am feeling anxious every morning when I wake up.

    How could Eckhart’s words help you with that? Do you do meditation? How did you start practising living in now and being present?


    1. Hi May,

      Yes I meditate. I sit down most mornings for 6 minutes and just practice being still and breathing. I have been listening to Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now since 2014 on CD. He teaches what we were never taught in church or school- namely, that we are not our minds. This is so important to people who suffer from anxiety! That fear and anxiety and worry are all just illusory. Thoughts that have no reality, unless we believe them. Reality is what is going on now, not yesterday or 10 minutes from now. In the present moment, I have learned to access stillness and peace.

      At first I could only feel stillness for a breath or two, but I stuck with it. I believed what Eckhart said, that my thoughts were not true, I didn’t have to listen in to them and be afraid. That if I accessed my stillness through mindful breathing, I would find peace. And I just kept at it. I worked on this as if the quality of my life depended on it, which of course it did.

      Today I have a much better relationship with reality. I no longer completely lose myself to fear and anxiety. If I get sucked in, I practice focusing on my breath, I feel the inner body, I listen to Eckhart Tolle videos or listen to my CDs. I focus on being grateful for my ease of well being. I focus on being grateful for the abundance of peace and blessings in my life. It is all about what you choose to focus your attention on. If I want peace, I need to focus on stillness and ignore pesky, dark thoughts. It is difficult when the mind is very active, but not impossible. And it gets better with practice.
